Hi!
My boyfriend and I will be camping along the south coast between Reykjavik and Skaftafell (or thereabouts). We'll be there from Sept 17th to 25th. Are there any really epic locations that we should camp? I'm hoping for something close to a waterfall or maybe on a farm? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
We're also thinking of getting a room somewhere for a night or two throughout our stay... any suggestions for that? Something budget friendly. :)
Thanks!

So.... cold....
Well September for camping is really out of the camping season. I don't know if facilities are open (toilets etc). Be prepared with warm sleeping bags and sleep in woolen underwear. I would never camp in September, I would rather shorten my trip if money is a huge issue and stay indoors.
There are some hostels on this way, in Skógar, Vík and Svínafell near Skaftafell.

The hostel in Skogar has a basic camping area right at it and a waterfall also, but after I pitched my tend beside a beautiful waterfall once I now think twice about it, was beautiful during day time, by the time you wanted to sleep you all the sudden relised how noisy that thing is.

The Skogar camp area is simply a big grass field with bathroom facilities at one end, and picnic tables scattered on the grass. No shelter or privacy of any kind.

lol we're Eastern Canadian! I've been camping in subzero temperatures before and spent all last winter running outside in -20C. I've already got a great stash of Merino Wool long underwear and have a great sleeping bag designed for cold temps. I actually like the cool air at night.
Thanks for the hostel locations, we'll probably spend a night or two in one.

Thanks for the insight, we'll definitely keep that in mind - or bring earplugs! :)

Thanks for the info - do you have any other sites that you would recommend that offer more privacy?

The Skogar field is quite large, so your tent could be 150m or so from the falls. The hotel next to the field serves a nice breakfast buffet.

There is a waterfall close to one of the campsites at Kirkjubaejarklauster, the one which is about 1-2km out of the village to the N. Whether it will be open in Sept, I don't know, but there is a website which lists all the campsites and their details Mrs Google will quickly find for you. And sometimes you can just use these campsites as wild camps when they are technically closed.

The campsite at Thakgil is one of the most spectacular. http://www.thakgil.is/?lang=en In theory it is closed in Sept but maybe you can just go there and wild camp. The access road is a bit tricky, and recent heavy rain may make it impassible.

For an epic location, consider the turf-roofed youth hostel at Fljotsdalur, which is about 25km inland of Hvolsvollur, with views over Eyjafjallajokull icecap from the north. http://www.hostel.is/hostels/fljotsdalur

This is not easy to camp in September and I don´t think that locals will appreciate if you camp in closed campsites. This is better to check in advance which ones are open. This is the case of Skaftafell campsite which is also a great place to be to sightseeing and hike. It is open until end of September.

You can get the free áning guide when you arrive, it is listed about 50 camping grounds with info on opening period.
Also, if you need info about camping in Iceland, you can contact Iceland Camping Equipment.
Have a nice trip.
