We're headed to Iceland from Sept 16 to 25th and while there, we were planning on spending some time hiking on the Vatnajokull glacier. What are the chances that Bárðarbunga's potential eruption could affect this part of our itinerary? I know this is near impossible to predict, but I have next to zero experience with volcanoes, so I'm hoping someone who's been through this before can shed some light.
Also, out of curiosity, once volcanoes reach an "orange alert" level, do things tend to simmer down within the next month? I'm just wondering if I should start looking into exploring other parts of Iceland. I'm not familiar with how widespread the effects can be.
Thanks so much, like I said, I'm naive when it comes to volcanoes. :)

Vatnajokull glacier is the biggest in Europe and most likely you plan to hike on its south slope because north part - most likely - won't be accessible in September anyway. And Bardarbunga is on a north slope. So - don't worry about... at least for now :)

Perfect! From everything I've read online, that's pretty much what I figured, but I'm glad to have confirmation. Thanks!

Should I be worried yet? :)
It seems like every news report I read is more serious in nature...
