We will be travelling to Iceland in Early June for 10 days, and will be splitting our time between the Snaefellsnes peninsular and Hella. Can someone tell me whether the volcanic ash will affect our stay in any way. I have seen some quite grim footage showing unpleasent scenary with ash covering the countryside, but am not sure where exactly this is, particularly in relation to Hella. We are able to cancel our trip and go elsewhere without significant penalty. Is this worth considering?
Thanks, PT1.

Ash should not affect your itinerary. Only exception is that car rentals don't allow you to drive through heavy ash fall, it can damage the car. Hella is only an 1,5 hour away from Reykjavik and you can check the weather before you go there and see if direction of the wind is good or bad. Looking forward to have you in Iceland :)

I visited the Snaefellsnes Peninsula about two weeks ago. There was no ash anywhere nearby. In fact, even near the volcano itself, there was very little disruption apparent.
There are some pictures of the whole trip - as well as some of the south of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula - here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnmcga/sets/72157623944114657/
As you can see, it's beautiful. Have a great trip!

Thanks for that input. Nice photos.. I am still not completely clear on the current situation in Hella. Does anyone know if there is any Ash on the ground there at present??
Thanks, PT1.

Haven't you heard that those who cancel their trip to Iceland wouldn't be allowed to visit at again? Ever! :-)))
Seriously - don't worry.
Hella looks like this - http://www.rusring.net/island/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/hella_e15_100707-800x381.jpg
Very nice place with good background :-) Not every day as the volcano is not that really active all the time but if you are lucky...
Snaefellsnes is no problem AT ALL (unless Snaefell itself starts to erupt).
You can check the situation with eruption at web-cams

as well as read daily reports at

So my personal opinion - you must come. But you must stop watching too much news! :))))

Many thanks. I will put this concern to bed now.... and as for the news, I haven't given that much credibility since the Florida election counting....

«On ashfall 23 May 2010 11:45
The eruption activity is minimal and therefore no significant ashfall is expected. The volcano is still being monitored and an ashfall forecast will be issued if neccessary.»

I sot this picture two days ago at Skogar. The day the Eruption stopped.

It shows very well that the ash is not dominating the area...
