I often find it useful to get a SIM card when I travel (to use with my unlocked phone)--for maps, Skype, etc. Is this worth doing in Iceland? I'll be doing a 2-week trip on the Ring Road (and journeys from there). Is there enough cell (mobile) phone service to make getting a SIM card worth while? Most places where I stop will have wifi.
maps maybe for Reykjavik, but really not that necessary hard to get lost, for the rest of the ring road you don't need it for directions, so unless you need to Skype at any hour of the day you could get along with wifi.

I'm thinking mainly for finding inns/hotels that I've reserved. Calling if needed or using Google Maps. Reviews of some lodgings say "was hard to find."
So if I do want a SIM card, is it easy to get one in Reykjavik without a lot of security hassles and not too expensive for just 2 weeks data?
I believe you can buy one on the flight coming in - or at gas stations. If you want to choose your phone number you'd probably have to go to a phone store in one of the malls - Kringlan or Smáralind. The initial card is more expensive than refills - but we're only talking about 2000 IKR ($15) I think.
Check out this page for more info from one of the phone companies.
Hard to find?? How accurat will maps be, hard to find depends very much on you, how good are you reading directions or a map, all places we went to were pretty easy to find without internet, ok in a few places we had to look where to go to, one was Hoefn since it's a big town for Iceland and the other one was close to Thingvellier, but we just asked people and never had a hard time finding the place afterwards.
Well, using ja.is you should be able to input the address and get directions (as well as a map) - and I guess Google Maps will do the same :-)
