Ideally, I would like to hitchhike around the entirety of Iceland, staying primarily on the main highway. For those who have experiencing hitchhiking around Iceland, what were the easiest and best places to get to? Are there roads besides the main one where I might see a fair amount of travelers by car? Do you think it's even feasible to do this? I'm willing to decrease my range of traveling depending on how my luck is, but I would really like to see as much as possible, have 18 days to do it, and renting a car is out of the question. What are the coolest places to visit on or near the Ring Road? And if anyone has some icelandic hitchhiking advice aside from the norm, lay it on me :) Thanks.

Cheers, again.

Hi, yeah, hitchhiking isn't the easiest way to get around Iceland. I didn't do a lot of hitchhiking there, we were traveling mostly by bus but because the buses rarely go more than once a day we often needed to get moving by other means. At very least 50% of our rides were tourists (and for some reason 50% of them were management consultants:). Usually from countries where they heard about hitchhiking (unlike Iceland). Unfortunately most tourists rent small toyotas where even two of them have trouble fitting in. As ever, you will get picked up fast when you least expect it and vice versa. Traffic is very sparse outside of Southeastern Iceland and it might be next to impossible to get a ride outside of main roads (and there are not many of them) and major tourist areas. Best of luck though, Iceland is incredible!

I've had mixed experiments with hitching in Iceland, but did some bits. Not long distances (I had a bus pass), unless I missed the bus (happened...), not always on the ring road.

The main difficulties are:

Trafic is pretty scarce
Tourists are willing, but as #2 says, often ride cars filled to the brim. I had to sit on packs sometimes, and it was very cramped.
You can't rely on the weather ("scorching" hot one moment, pissing down the next)

But some good points:

Easy to find a good spot along the road
Locals very nice (had everything from tractors to horse van to businessmen)
Plenty of time to enjoy the scenery

As long as you got a tent and some food, you're ready.

I know people who did round trip in five!!! days.
Recently drove two French girls from Selfoss to Reykjavik - they were finishing their round and were very happy with the experience.
So Golden circle and Ring road shouldn't be a problem.

Around the capital if you do not have huge amounts of luggage with you you can get picked up in 10 minutes, as you go farther away from Reykjavík you can expect to wait longer, i did alot of hitchiking around reykjavík and have once waited for more than fifteen minutes and the first car that came picked me up.

But as traffic density drops you can expect to wait longer.
