Taking a 7 day trip to Iceland and need some assistance.

Here are my tentative plans, but I need some help as I plan to tour DIY style once I get to Iceland. (vs taking a group tour)

ARRIVE: April 1st at 4AM (early I know) and planned to stay at a hostel and catch up on my sleep for a few hours. Then I would spend the rest of that day exploring Reykjavik. I also plan to rent a car (4WD) from the airport. I'm trying to decide between the Kex Hostel and the Loft Hostel if anyone has a preference. I know there is a lot to see and do in Reykjavik, but my real goal for this trip is to explore the beautiful landscape.

DAY 2 (April 2nd)—DAY 6 (April 6th) Driving wherever I want. Most of what I would like to do is on the west side of the country. Would it make sense to do a half circle vs circling the entire country? I don't want to be rushed. I'm having difficulty figuring out where I would need to stop and stay the night along my journey. A few things I would like to do are visit the Blue Lagoon, Horseback Riding, Viking Boat Tour, visit the beaches at Vik, Snaefellsness peninsula,Skogafoss waterfall, and seeing a few puffins wouldn't hurt either:) I need help determining what route would make the most sense.

DAY 7: Depart Reykjavik at 3:30 PM. I figure I would spend the morning in Reykjavik enjoying the last bit of my trip there.

I'm sure some of you may need more details, but this is my first time planning a trip. If it weren't for needing a place to sleep outside of Reykjavik I would just wing it. But I don't know if that's the best plan.

Wonder why you think you need a 4WD. Seems to me that you are planning the normal / very touristy things. When the things are between Vik and snaefellsnes then do not try to circle the country. 7 days will also be extremely rushed for that.

In response to #1

I wanted to get a 4wd in case there were some off roads I wanted to veer off onto. I didn't want to be restricted. But if you think that is unnecessary I will reconsider. I will be going to glacier lagoon now. But that will be the farthest east I will go.

Yeah, I knew going into it I would need more time there to do the whole ring road. So thanks for confirming.

After a lot of researching, this is the itinerary I came up with. Please let me know what you all think!

Leave Boston March 31st — Arrive in Reykjavik April 1st at 4 AM.
Sleep somewhere for a few hours and then explore Reyk the rest of the day. (this is when I was considering KEX) OVERNIGHT IN REYKJAVIK

April 2nd — Reykjavik to Vik
Stops: Skogarfoss, Seljavallalaug pool and the Dyrhólaey/Reynisdrangar basalt columns at Reynesfjara Beach (in Vik) I realize this doesn't look like a lot, but with the drive, I'm sure we will see a lot of places we want to stop for photos. OVERNIGHT IN VIK

April 3 — Vik to Jokulsarlon to Sulfoss
Stops: Glacier Lagoon and anywhere along the road that looks cool. We will be doing a boat tour at the lagoon and hoping for some seal action. After the tour head to Sulfoss. OVERNIGHT IN SULFOSS

April 4 — Sulfoss to Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Stops: Gullfoss and Geyser. Possibly do a volcano tour.
After activities here, drive to Snaefellsnes. OVERNIGHT IN SNAEFELLSNES (we were thinking Hotel Budir)

April 5 — Snaefellsnes to Reykjavik
Stops: This is where would like to visit a fishing town, do a sushi boat tour and ride horses if time permits. Later that night we will head back to Reykjavik. OVERNIGHT IN REYKJAVIK

April 6 — Another day in Reykjavik. I'm sure we will find plenty to do here given we are only spending two days here. OVERNIGHT IN REYKJAVIK

April 7 — We leave Iceland today. But we thought that we would go do Blue Lagoon before our 3:30 flight. They open at 10 and we would need to leave for the airport around 1:30. Would that give us enough time there?

Thanks for any and all input!

It is basically illegal to drive offroad in Iceland. And the roads where you plan to go are ok for any car.

I realize this doesn't look like a lot

Looks like plenty, though you could sneak in a visit to Seljalandsfoss too.

Vik to Jokulsarlon to Sulfoss

About 500km of driving, just in case you didn't realise. J isn't specifically mentioned on this distance table but its about 75km short of Hofn. http://www.vegagerdin.is/vegakerfid/vegalengdir/tafla-yfir-ymsar-leidir/

We will be doing a boat tour at the lagoon

You might not, you know. It might be melted enough yet. Tours to walk on the frozen surface of glacial lagoons are advertised up until the end of March...

OVERNIGHT IN SULFOSS

Selfoss is a working town of little interest to tourists and consequently little tourist accommodation. Consider staying in Hvergerdi instead. Much tourist accommodation in Iceland is just scattered through the countryside, so that's another alternative.

Possibly do a volcano tour

I'm not really sure what you mean by that. What did you have in mind?

visit a fishing town

Fishing is generally rather industrial in Iceland and the romantic notion of pretty fishing villages as found in other countries doesn't really extend to Iceland. The reality is large, smelly fish processing factories blighting the landscape. That said, Stykkisholmur is one of the few villages in Iceland that is rather pretty for itself. The twin hamlet of Rif and Hellisandur, which are barely even villages, are also accounted attractive.

Oh and about the volcano tour. I knew someone who traveled to Iceland and did a volcano tour (lowered into an inactive volcano) and was interested in it. I haven't found exactly where he went yet but working on getting the information.

Wonder why you don't simply Google it? It is so famous that you hardly have to type more than a few letters. http://www.insidethevolcano.com/

I know I can use Google. But I rely more on references from trusted people (like yourself) than to just pick randomly. Which is why I was waiting to hear back from my friend. Because I see multiple tours.

Thanks for the link.
