Hi,
I was quoted 450 hv or something for a hotel room in Lviv.
Is that reasonable. What is the exchange rate.
My currency calculator was no help.
Are there decent translating electronic units that will translate English yo Crylic?

Try oanda.com or xe.com for currency exchange.

For translating cyrillic, try translate.ru

I used to calculate it according to the national bank rate.
You see the different rates on different exchange offices.
Then , I decided that the basic way to calculate is to multiply it on 12.0
The rate is more or less different.
Therefore , the best exchange rate is 12.0
Because , it might be that you calculate in euros of how you sell euro , but the hotel must buy euro with a dfferent rate than ''sell rate''
so , calculate it as a 12 uah for 1 euro

Lviv has a few very good quality hotels.
also , even the hostels have a private rooms.
As far as I know - 4 hostels in the center have a private doubles ( which can be used as a singles as well )
Check it out on hostelworld

http://www.hostelworld.com/findabed.php?Search=1&DateStart=2010-02-28&NumNights=3&ChosenCity=Lviv&ChosenCountry=Ukraine&

but the comparative rates on different currencies on hostelworld web site are not always correct.
Though usually I folow the hostelworld rate when the tourists say that they calculated according to the hostelworld prices .

Last week there were around 8 UAH to the US dollar, that is about 13 to the pound.

Ruth's link is a translation site, between Russian and English (+some other western) languages. Cyrillic is not a language, its an alphabet. A very diverse range of languages, from at least 5 language families, are conventionally written in cyrillic.

If you're trying to translate from Ukrainain then translate.ru will not be much help. If what you need is transliteration (place names or personal names re-written in latin script) then wikipedia has the answers

Hi,
Thanks for the exchange rate.
I was thinking of one of those electronic phrase translators that look like a Blackberry.
But I have never used one and would like to know if anyone else has.
National Geographic has one for $49 but Russian, no Ukrainian!

Slav has given me some good prices, so I will go with his group.

Around Lviv I would say that you don't have to mind so so so much about the language. Guess a phrasebook from Berlitz it's cheaper and more handy for both sides, who doesn't know how pronunciation and for the one trying to understand what you want and will be able to read, doesn't matter about batteries or if lost how much money you could loose.

The city is more developed for tourism and besides of hotels you find good hostels as well with private rooms that are really decent and better price. Hotels I would say that may be around 40-50euros, but sometimes the hotels are not that nice and doesn't help much into information, that's why I suggest some hostel search. I would recommend Kosmonaut or Leo City.

The currency here in Ukraine is around 8 for dollar, 12.5 for pound and 11 for euros.

The LP Ukrainian phrase book is good (although some of the practical hints and tips, eg getting a visa are way out of date).

Don't bother with the hippocrene Ukraine language guide -its rubbish.

The person is searching the private room and not a bunk bed.
'' Live Lviv mini-hostel '' , and Roxelana hostel , they are the two hostels who have Deluxe double rooms , for very cheap price.
Not just a private single , double rooms , but type of the ''DeLuxe'' room.
If you can manage to contact the hostel runners directly by email , then you can negotiate the price and to get a good deal .

i just booked a basic room with two twins for 300 UAH in a Hotel, about $38 Canadian dollars. That seems reasonable to me. 450 is pretty good too.
