A Ukrainian phrasebook might be better ! !

Absolutely true. Why Russian???

Well, I though that Rusian would be better since I might go to Latvia aswell and won't have to stress out with 2 languages as in both countries Russian is widly spoken.

Nothing is so much hated in Latvia by native Latvians as Russian, it would be much more appreciated if you spoeak some Latvian phrases or just stick to English

Indeed. The topicstarter might probably not have known their history if thinking that Russian will really help him there :)

I've just returned from a short trip around Ukraine. Although I have no Russian, I found just about every bus and train ticket seller being helpful once I had written down my destination (in both English, and Cyrillic from the LP guide), date and (if relevant) train number. In Odesa, the woman even left her busy desk to lead me out to the correct bus! And yes, you might want to learn to recognise some Cyrillic phrases e.g. "Closed", "Toilets"...
