I am looking to rent an apartment in central Kharkov around two weeks in March or April. Any takers? Links?

Try a web search. You really shouldn't have to pay more than $40-45 US per night in my opinion, but that doesn't mean that you will necessarily find anyone willing to do that. Kharkov isn't a big tourist destination despite its size and my experience in this part of Ukraine, but not in Kharkov in particular, is that anyone who has anything to rent has their eyes light up when foreigners ask about it and they raise their prices. Anything above $60 a night is a complete rip off. Unfortunately you are not going to have a lot of choices because Kharkov is not a big tourist destination, as I said.

I can't offer any personal recommendations having not been to Kharkov. However, some apartment rental agencies are more honest than others. I would not under any circumstances use any agency who demanded payment via Western Union in advance. Better agencies will either accept credit cards (at least that way you can protest the charge if necessary when you get back home) or accept payment upon arrival. Cash is probably the preferred payment method. Complete rip offs are rare, but again be wary of anyone insisting that you pay them via Western Union. Bait and switch tactics (you get offered the "only" apartment they have left which is a downgrade from what you were promised in advance) and raising the prices after you arrive don't happen most of the time, but then again there have been reports of such. If you are asked to pay a deposit in advance, that's not necessarily a rip off as some agencies have had problems with travelers who book apartments and never show up (it happens much more than you might think - a lot of people make plans to go to Ukraine and then back out). However, try to keep any deposit to a minimum and remember that if you pay it by Western Union, that money is GONE FOREVER once you send it with no way for a refund and you just have to hope that the agency will actually show up to meet you. If you find an agency that seems good, do a web search on them and see if other travelers have reported problems. Do this BEFORE you make any agreements.

I cannot advise you strongly enough NOT to try to find something via Craigslist. If you do that you are completely on your own and do not come back here crying if you get ripped off.

Hi Jman.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Yes, I though the price would be in that area so that´s good. I prefer an apartment to a hotel, because I can invite and it feels more like my own place. And living in a hotel for two-three weeks is just boring.

Thanks

Look at hostelbookers.com and hostelworld.com, I am sure you will find what you want.

Sorry for intruding, but have you tried the hospitalityclub site and like?
If you don't object living in one apartment with a host, it can be a much more cheap.
Of course, if money isn't the primary question, you may as well use any rental agency.
