Hi,

I'm about to book a few days in Instanbul - which I've been meaning to explore and experience for years - and am looking for tips as to best area to stay. I'll be going along with two girlfriends - we're into history, culture as well as enjoying good food, drink and atmosphere. There's a lot of choice around which area to stay in, so any recommendations or pointers as to how areas compare or would be brilliant. Similarly, any specific recommendations for hotels or guest houses with character would be welcome (we don't mind splashing out or going basic - just looking for somewhere with a good location and a bit of charm).

Thanks in advance guys!!

I was there years ago and stayed in the Sultan Ahmet area. I loved it because it was so convenient for seeing the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, etc. All withing walking distance. The Grand Bazaar is fairly close to this neighborhood as well. Hope you have a great time!

I love Sultanahmet. To wake up and look out of the window at the sublime skyline and ancient history is wonderful. But(there is always a but!)nightlife here is lowkey,no clubs etc.mainly cafe bars.
If you want more nightlife and entertainment choices then going north over Galata Bridge to Karaköy,Galata/pera,Tünel and Cihangir means you are there amongst endless choices of eateries, clubs etc.plus these are all still old neighbourhoods with character and they are all convenient for the tram, metro and ferries to get around cheaply and quickly to other area's.They are also neighbourhoods which still have plenty of local residents too rather than just tourists which help to give them local character.
As there are 3 of you it may be worth considering a small apartment this would give you more space than a 3 bed hotel room and probably wouldn't work out any more expensive either.Istanbul hotel rooms tend to be on the small side unless you are prepared to pay high money for a suite hence an apartment could be good for you.
