Hi everyone !

What if i just fly to turkey with out any reservation of any kind and start travelling around by my self in this country, my arriving and starting point will be izmir and by 3 weeks time i have to be back at izmir to fly back home.

I already have visited istanbul a few years ago behind, this time i will not visit istanbul.

So please let me know ?

I want to get to know this country as much as it is possible i am interested in everything that has to do with culture

Dates from 24 of september to 14 of oct, i know ramadan month will be from the 13 of september to 13 of october, but it seems ramadan will not affect my travel plans will it ?

How much money will it cost, budget mid range maybe ?

what will it be the best way to travel inside turkey ?

Me and my lonely planet guide book and some cash and keep optimistic, what do you think ?

Safety ?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!!

Alessandro

Dear Alessandro,

Ramadan will not effect your travel thats for sure.

if you want to skip istanbul during your vacation you better start with Gallipoli and visit Pergamum for maybe 2 nights and then you may go south to izmir to visit st.mary's house and other historical places nearby and for a real cultural excitement you better go to Cappadocia and stay there, seightsee, take a balloon tour, etc.
you can travel from A to B by bus, it may be a bit tiring to travel by bus but more reasonable. and you can find cheap hostels in all locations with 30-40 USD costs per person.

I just did the same thing.....arrived and started following my nose, as they say. I had done lots of research and knew of lots of things that I wanted to do, but I also wanted a relaxing vacation, so I didn't try to see too much, in fact I avoided most of the usual tourist places. I also avoided long bus rides and used Turkish airlines a few times.

I found the costs quite reasonable...and I'm Canadian....though not cheap, by any means. The most I paid for a hotel, while I was paying was 90 ytl per night, in Bursa........and the least i paid was 20 YTL in Afyon. the best hotel was in Trabzon....65 YTL for a really, really, really nice hotel, with friendly, helpful staff..........I couldn't say the same for the hotel in Bursa. I had some work in Istanbul, and stayed in Taksim for that.....hotel there was stupidly expensive.....130 Euros a night, or something

I think you will do just fine without any hotel reservation but try to buy your long-distance bus ticket a day or hours in advance. It would also be helpful if you carry a cellphone with you. Hotels in big cities and popular coastal towns will naturally be more expensive. As bradkk pointed pointed out, expect to pay between 30 to 80 YTL per night for a single room.

The bus is a good option for exploring the country. If I'm not mistaken, most flights transit through Istanbul to connect to another city.
