Its been some ten years since I backpacked/trekked around turky, i always new id have to go back when i had kids;this summer looks like it.

we (two adults/5 and 8 year old kids) plan to travel in turky for a month.
some basic questions:
-does it make sence to rent a car for this long? what should we expect to pay?
-can one just pitch a tent ( as i did a decade ago) pritty much anywhere, or are there many ligitamte pay-camping-sites?
-we'll definitly move around ( though not at too high a pace); other than Cappadocia (as a supurb source of fun exploring and a good 'base-camp'), what places would be on your "kids-must-see" list?

Thank you for your thoughts.

1) petrol is extremely expensive in Turkey. One who posted here last year paid $1,000 just for fuel and car rental for a month. "What should we expect to pay?" Ans: "How long is a string?"

2) most campsites are on the Aegean and Med coasts. "Wild" camping is surely done, but we never did that. The Turkish Tourist board in New York (Google for address) normally gives a free camping map of the better camps in Turkey.

3) Everyone wants a "Must see" list. "What places would be on your "kids-must-see"
list? I guess the same as an adult must-see list. The tourist attractions are not segregated into "Kids go there, and adults go here."

To give you some idea of the cost, petrol costs about 3 YTL a litre, which translates to US$ 2.25 per litre, or nearly US$ 9.00 per US gallon.

A small car rental can cost US$ 40/45 per day.

I think kids would like Urfa.... mostly cause the fish lake is really sweet.
