What riots?

Are you thinking of the Nika Riots?

Riots? There have been a few peaceful demonstrations against the government and against a possible intervention by the military, but nothing that I would remotely describe as a riot.

My take on this is that the European Press is looking to keep all things Turkish " controversial " in the minds of the Europeans trying to decide if they want Turkey as part of the EU.

If the EU does not include Turkey in the EU then it will be Europe's loss, big time. Turkey is a powerhouse.

My opinion only.

TallTravel is correct- The EU and much of the press have been running an anti-Turkish campaign for years.

Of course it actually doesnt matter all that much- the Europeans (UK and Scandanavians excluded) are in a state of terminal decline with declining population and economies.

Its like watching the collapse of Byzantium........................

Interesting comments about Europe, Raki Man. I am touring E. Europe now, and I think you are talking mainly about Western Europe when you discuss decline, right? Because when I think of the decline of a cilivation and way of life I think of the USA, the issuer of my passport....sad, but true.

Tell me about what you see as the signals of decline in Europe, would you? If you think it would inflame too many people I would love to learn via PM or e mail. I visited Turkey a few months ago, because whether the new French like it or not, it IS part of Europe....and Asia. I am fascinated by what I see as an economy stronger than almost any in Europe.

Once again I have to agreee with the above posters...there have not been any riots in ýstanbul recently. The last riot was related to the May Day celebrations ( May 1 ) that are held all around the world. In fact there were riots on those days in places like LA, Berlin, China etc....just to name only a few. These are peaceful demonstration in regards to the up an coming elections and if fact they are classified as rallies.....many young, old, women and children are all in attendance as well.

It's a bit paranoid to say "The EU and much of the press have been running an anti-Turkish campaign for years". I'd say the right wing parties and press have been running an anti-Turkish campaign for years, but I don't think institutionally the EU run the Turks down. Why would they be negotiating - just for show ?

I personally want Turkey to join the EU, in stages, with milestones they can reach on minority rights, human rights and democracy. Much progress has already been made. I do think if we turn Turkey away, we by default will hand power over to the Islamists and the ultrarightwing in Turkey - and will miss an opportunity to welcome what will, as TallTravel says, be an economic powerhouse in years to come.

While it's true that press reporting about Turkey sometimes leave a lot to be desired, in this particular instance I am not clear what the criticism is based on. Can anyone actually provide a link to a relevant article?
