Just get your visa at the first border point in turkey. Cost is $20.

You won't save money by getting it in Athens. Visa cost is the same everywhere for US Citizens. :)
Just go to Visa desk before passport control and have your visa stamp at the port of entry.

I just returned from Turkey last month, traveling via train from Bulgaria. I carry a US passport and the visa cost $20 at the border. The visa office was open when the train passed through at 2:00 AM.
