We're heading off to Nemrut Dagi on Monday but are not sure whether to approach from the north (from Malatya) or from the south (from Adiyaman). The guidebooks seem to imply that the road between the two sides (i.e. from the parking area to the Gunes Hotel) is passable by foot only - we have a 4-wheel drive, can it be done? If not, we will definitely approach from the south as we want to see some of the sites along that road as well.

We walked, and I don't recall seeing any "drivable" routes from Gunes and other side. The powers that be may get a little pissed if you try to cut your own route.....

Couple from Incirlik went just before going back to states. They drove, and stayed at a place that had a pool. I think they went via Khata.

Thanks, we are not into making our own trails. We will approach from the south and possibly walk to the Gunes.
HMB - yes, there are a number of places in Karadut, about 9 km from the summit. A couple of them have pools - such as the Hotel Kervansaray. We shall see on Tuesday. Think we will use Malatya for an intermediate stop in any event, as there doesn't seem to be much in between Kayseri and Adiyaman and going all the way in one day is probably pushing it.

Good idea cochradi; Gunes drives up for the sunrise and sunset, so you are pretty much guaranteed a ride to Malatya. Coming from the Malatya side to the Kahta side is a bit riskier, as there are not always tours from Urfa, with empty seats going back.

Just as a follow up, there is a very poor road but one has to head to Eski Kahta and then to the Malatya road. We didn't try it, but were assured our vehicle could make it. The road on the south side (Karadut to the parking lot) was completely replaced 2 years ago and can be driven by any car - it is now all interlocking paving stones. Walk up to the tumulus from there is perhaps 15 minutes.
