I'd appreciate any inspiring/useful information about Istanbul and any other destinations in Western Turkey.

I'll be visiting family in Crete during early October, and after fulfilling some family obligations, I'll be free to roam for about 8 days! I've always wanted to experience Turkey, but need a little advice on where to go.

A bit about myself:

31-year-old woman traveling alone
I don't like to rush when I travel
Hoping to check out local music and art scenes
Fascinated by religion
Beach/scenic/nature lover
I live for good food and wine
Not a fan of cheesy tourism, but willing to put up with it if the sites are beautiful/inspirational

Thanks for your thoughts!

If you have only 8 days I wouldn't say you're free to roam! :(

Go to Istanbul(Konstantinopolou just for you), you won't regret it!

Istanbul is not a beach city so you need to give up that adventure.
"TimeOut Istanbul "is a great guide published monthly both in English and Turkish(sold separately) and includes all the latest news on the arts and entertainment scene of Istanbul.October is an indoor season for Istanbul's night life so the open air venues on the Bosphorus shores will be closed.
There are Lots of taverns serving meze food around the AsmaliMescit area end of Beyoglu.

Istanbul definitely has more than enough religious sites to keep you interested. You should probably stay in Istanbul the whole time if you don't want to be rushed. There are beaches on the Black Sea Coast and the Prince's Islands in the Marmara Sea that make doable day trips from Istanbul.
