We are travelling from Iran and need a place to collect mail and stay for a few days rest and are thinking of staying in Van. The accommodation there looks to be quite expensive and am wondering if there is a small town or area outside the main tourist area that would be cheaper and relaxing to stay at. Can anyone advise if the Poste Restante facility in Van is available
Van expensive? When I visited Van, the hotel situation there was similar to just about every other town in Turkey. There was an area of town with a large cluster of standard Turkish hotels, with prices similar to anywhere else in Eastern Turkey. I can't imagine Van has been significantly gentrified since I was there...
Van itself is an ugly concrete city, built up from scratch after WWI. There are several nice places to visit around the city though, so it makes a good base for day-trips.
A lovely place to relax for a few days is the small town of Adilcevas, about 2 hours by bus from Van on the lake...
Van isn't especially attractive, and if you want something relaxing you should probably try somewhere else. But it's a good base with all the usual amenities. Price shouldn't be a problem.
