Thanks.
Just wanted to confirm!

Yes, that area of Istanbul is amazing - just past that grand aqueduct, there's a great market area (kadinlar pazar–women's market) with a tea house and plenty of old men hanging out, butcher and cheese shops, and kebap places. And there's another square nearby (pazar –horse market ?) with other restaurants and cafés that comes alive at night. There are good bakeries in the area. Just regular folks, no tourists, and yet you cross Atatürk Blvd. and you can then follow a winding street with all kinds of shops that eventually leads to the Grand Bazaar.

Hello again,

I have a question about getting from the Bodrum ferry to the Bodrum airport.

I now see that the ferry schedule is posted for the summer of 2015 !
Here's the site: http://www.bodrumferryboat.com/en.html

I see a ferry that runs at 09:30 am.

Do you know if there is a shuttle bus service from the ferry to the airport that is timed with the arrival of the ferry?
And do you know approximately how long it takes to go by bus from the ferry to the airport?

If the buses are not timed with the ferry schedule, do you know how often those buses might run?

I'm trying to figure out my options for getting from Datça to Istanbul by plane.

Cheers,
MrPooh

The only official bus transfer service is with Havaş,and this leaves from Bodrum otogar at the top(north end)of the town so you would probably need to take a taxi up there if you have a fair amount of luggage as it is a long walk.
Here is the web site;as you can see they leave pretty much ½ hourly and take 45 minutes but remember you need to check in a minimum of 1 hour before take off so factor that in when looking-
http://www.havas.net/en/OurServices/BusServicesAndCarParkingFacilities/ServicePoints/Pages/Bodrum.aspx

The ferry takes 2 hours so you'd arrive at 11.30,say 30 minutes to disembark and get to the otogar,so to be safe look at the 14.30 bus,you may struggle for the 12.00 bus and risk missing your flight! It'll give you chance to check out the pleasant harbour area and have some lunch before leaving.Trust me,a nice lunch in Bodrum will be cheaper than a cup of tea and a biscuit at Bodrum airport...thieving devils ;-/

Thanks!

I see that buses do run about every 1/2 hour, but then there is that gap between Noon and 14:30 ! I think that will make it challenging, because I was hoping to get a flight that's around 15:00 from Bodrum to IST. Too bad. I was hoping to try and make the ferry work with my plans.

One question:
Are buses from the ferry to the otogar coordinated with the arrival of each ferry?

Or, if there are regular buses from the ferry to the otogar, how often do buses do that route, and how long is the journey?

No,I'm afraid ferry times and buses are not coordinated(good heavens this is Turkey after all haa haa !)If you can catch the 12 noon bus then that would work for you.Because the ferry is a domestic one disembarkation is generally pretty quick(unlike those from say,Kos)so if you are waiting at the exit and sprint off grab a cab direct to the otogar(because no,there are no buses on that route :o/ but always cabs waiting ) then perhaps you can get it okay.
You'd have 30 minutes;this is very fine and allows no time for any unforeseen problems.Up to you whether you risk it or not.I have to say, btw, that when giving advice I always tend to err on the side of caution rather than blithely say"yeah no probs mate,go for it".

I don't know your travel date to Istanbul but I'm guessing c.24/09 or 25/09 and looking at flights those into Ataturk are expensive ,those into SAW much less so.But... I can't remember;will you stay in Istanbul for a time or are you returning there on your departure day?If the latter then you need a flight into Ataturk don't you?
THY have a flight at 15.02(TK2507)but it is 309TL...ouch!They have a little later one at 16.40(TK2515)for 199TL-big difference and you could comfortably take the 14.30 bus for that one.Other flights into Ataturk are either too early or very late for you .
Anyway hopefully you can sort this section out now.

Thanks again.

I think I'm not going to take the chance of missing a flight. Too many things to factor in.

Instead, I'm going to take an overnight bus from Datça to Istanbul.

I have a departing flight (leaving the country of Turkey back to the States) on Saturday September 26, around 13:00pm to catch.

I think I'm going to take an overnight bus on Thursday to arrive on Friday. That will give me another day in Istanbul before catching a plane the next day. I would consider taking an overnight bus on Friday, because it would match up well with my flight on Saturday, but I don't want to risk missing the plane in case anything happens with the bus ride in terms of delays.

I know you can't predict the future, but do you have any opinion on these two choices, with respect to bus reliability?

Maybe in the end it's my choice, to chose whatever gives me the peace of mind I need, right? I know if I plan to arrive a day early, I won't be worrying about making my connection !

Cheers,

MrPooh

"....I think I'm not going to take the chance of missing a flight. Too many things to factor in...."
Exactly! This is why I am always a bit cautious as I said;I always think of what negative things could happen-like a bus breakdown....
Intercity buses here are actually very good and very reliable but...yes of course they can(and do)breakdown sometimes.
Knowing your departure date and plans viz-a-viz a bus on Thursday night I just looked at flights on Thursday from Bodrum.Pegasus have a flight(PC175) at 20.40 arriving into SAW airport at 21.50 for just 64TL including all taxes which is cheaper than the bus(100TL) and would save you a sore bottom and achy legs if you are tall :) You would then have all day on Friday in Istanbul having had a decent nights sleep too-and had chance for a quick look around Bodrum on Thursday afternoon.
Getting from SAW into the city is easy enough nowadays so that is no hassle for you.
BTW,Pegasus also have a later flight(PC177)dep.21.20 arr.SAW 22.30 for the same price,64TL

Whatever you choose to do I must say that being back in Istanbul at least the day before your outbound flight makes very good sense rather than arriving back on Saturday morning.....much too risky!

Thanks for the guidance on giving myself extra time and taking into account unexpected transportation problems.

Given that I want to spend as much time in Datça as possible, it looks like I'm going to opt for the overnight bus!

I would have liked to have experienced the ferry ride, but there is too much extra time involved to assure that I make my connections.

During my last trip to Turkey, I took the ferry from Istanbul across the water to make a connection for a bus to Veredama during my last trip to Turkey, I took the ferry from Istanbul across the water to make a connection for a bus to Bergama. It was a lovely experience.

Cheers!

Greetings,

Here's yet another question:

When I arrive in Istanbul, can I go to an office for Metro Turizm and buy a bus ticket in advance for either my bus ride from Göreme to Marmaris or from Datça to Istanbul?

Similarly, when I am in Göreme, can I buy a ticket at the bus station there for my journey from Datça to Istanbul that I plan to make a few days later?

Being able to buy a ticket in advance will make me feel more assured that I will get a seat on the journey I want.

Thanks in advance.

David
