Hello,
My fiancé and I are heading over to Turkey in November. We are on a year-long trip and only in initial stages of planning for Turkey. We will spend around 3 weeks.

We are meeting friends who will have already been travelling in Turkey so that's why our itinerary might appear a bit odd. We meet them on November 8 and they leave the country on November 14.

We need some help with our few days in-between arriving in Istanbul (from Bosnia) and meeting them in Çanakkale. Originally the plan was to visit Troy. I was wondering if we could possibly also fit in a trip to Gökçeada to do a day-hike but I am thinking it is too much to fit in. I think we are leaning towards basing ourselves in Çanakkale. Can anyone suggest a nice beach nearby? (I realise it won't be ideal weather.)

Here is what we have so far:

3 Nov Arrive Istanbul in evening
4 Nov Bus to Çanakkale
5 Nov Day trip to Troy
6 Nov ?
7 Nov ? (need to be in Çanakkale in evening)
8 Nov Tour of Gallipoli
9 Nov-15 Nov Istanbul
16 Nov- 23 Nov Still working on it: Cappadocia, Antalya, maybe Cirali or Kayakoy, Pamukkale
24 Nov Fly out

Appreciate any help! Thanks!

Too right it won't be beach weather by then!I'd forget that.Gökçeada for a day is...possible but a bit pointless really. You'd hardly have time do do anything in the few hours you'd have there. It needs a few days really to enjoy it.
Troy only takes half a day at the most so you could just down the coast a bit to Assos Behramkale which has stunning ruins plus a nice beach(loony!) and the village is very sweet. The whole of this area is steeped in ancient history and epic tales,so lovely!Maybe stay round there overnight and return to Çanakkale the day after giving you a day and 2 nights at Assos.i.e.nights 5th and 6th and go back on 7th.
For the second half forget Cırali and Olympos, they'll be closed up and sleeping by then.If you stay in Fethiye you can take the bus to Kayaköyü for a visit.Antalya and to some extent Side have 12 month tourism so you'll be fine there,as does Pamukkale too.

Two things: first, you (tentatively) plan on visiting Troy on 5 Nov, and Gallipoli on 8 Nov. Troy is not an all day trip. Really. There are tours available that will take you to see Troy in the morning, take you to a restaurant for lunch, then to Gallipoli for the afternoon, and then take you to Istanbul, with dinner along the way (arriving 11-midnight). You might want to look into one of these. Second, rather than going directly to Canakkale, you might consider visiting either Bursa or Edirne along the way. Both have sights you may find interesting. These are similar distances between Istanbul and Canakkale, but in completely opposite directions, so you wouldn't visit both (unless you visited one the way there, and the other on the way back). Both can be accessed with public transportation. There are also wineries located near Edirne. I don't know if there are any tours for them, or if they can only be accessed via car (or if that is your sort of thing anyway).

Thanks for your advice and suggestions saikanarya. Yes, I was thinking it is too much- I always try and fit in too much at first! Thanks for confirming that. I will take a look at Assos Behramkale as it sounds like it offers a lot, even for us crazies that like beaches during late Autumn/Winter!

You anticipated my second question re the second part of the trip. I have been reading how some places will be shut down by November. Will look into Fethiye and a bus trip to Kayaköyü. Was hoping to do some hiking around the area but might have to base that around what will be open.
Thanks again!

Thanks for that information catfriend. I will look up Bursa and Edirne as other possibilities as well. We probably won't get a car at this stage but that might change. Cheers.

Although some of the accomodation along the Lycian way is small pensions there is also plenty on offer in what are basically private homes, such as those with köy muhtars(village headmen). This web site if you haven't seen it gives accomodation info-

The weather early November should still be decent enough to do some hiking, but do remember the days will be shorter.
Assos Behramkale is indeed a very special area, forming as it does the southern edge of the Kazdağılar, the Mount Ida of mythology :)
