Tuva

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Russia

Hi, Anyone out there been to Tuva recently? I'd be interested in hearing about any experiences/issues/problems travellers have had while on the road in Tuva. What's the security situation like there? How easy is it to get around? How accurate is the LP guide?

Try searching on this branch. There were several travelers to Tuva last summer and perhaps your questions would be better answered by contacting one of them.

Most people who go to Tuva have prearranged plans and local contacts. It is not an easy place for independent travelers especially if you don't speak Russian.

I was there last summer...I had to go through a company to get my "invitation letter" and had them help me set up a couple things, but for the most part it can be done on your own with relative ease.

basically i visited and met a bunch of people and arranged with locals visits out to lakes and the countryside...and to see the neolithic carvings and stones and whatnot...arranged to see some throat singing...went to a shaman...and sampled lots of great food! I was in and around Kyzyl and only for a few days, but it is an absolutely amazing place.
