two of us are visiting croatia in march and we are interested in trekking for some of our trip. i understand there are some mountain huts about but i am not sure if they are open in march and what the weather will be like around then. it would be also good to know how clear the tracks are. obviously we will get OS maps and be prepared etc but it would be great to know a bit more before we get there. we are thinking of paklenica national park +/- plitvice lakes (although the walks around plitvice dont seem that intrepid as far as i can tell)
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

In March, you might have to go south for some spring weather. In northern Croatia, it will still be the end of winter and the leaves won't have grown back, making the landscape less attractive. Of course, in Paklenica you'll still be able to enjoy the dramatic views, and same in Plitvice (you're right about it being easy hiking there). An option could be to head further south, including some of the southern islands like Mljet or Hvar, or to go for pine tree forests that look the same year round, for example Risnjak NP near Rijeka. No guarantee of good weather, though.

In my experience trails are well marked, and the huts seem to be open year round (but someone else might want to confirm this). The ones that are manned could be closed in winter, but the unmanned ones (called sklonice if I remember well) should always be open.

Every year is so different, but March might be a bit early at higher elevations, inland and north. I was in Plitvice a few years ago in April, and there was still some snow on many trails, but the weather was fine for hiking.
