traveling by train in 3rd class

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Russia

hi guys
considering the high prices of the train between moscow and st petersbourg i was thinking also about taking a 3rd class train..
how is it like travling in this kind of wagon? dangerous or very unconfortable?
thanks

Very dangerous!

3rd class (platzkart) is imo the nicest way to travel by train. Lots of contacts with other people, cheap and safe (with so many people in a wagon who will look after your stuff no thief will try to steel something). I have took just a few trains in Russia and a lot in Ukraine, and they were all 3rd class, never any problems and i always had a nice time. I prefer this over a small cabin where you will sit the whole trip together with 3 or 5 others, even if you don't like them (unless you are willing to pay the exorbitant high prices of travelling single in a first class cabin).
