Russian double entry visa for overland travel

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Russia

Hi everyone,

my girlfriend and me (both Germans) want to go to Russia overland throught the Stans entering Russia from Kazakhstan, then go to Mongolia and turn back, all by car. To do that we apparently need a double entry visa since we cannot apply for a visa in Mongolia. The questions are:

  1. Is a 90 day double entry business visa our best bet?
  2. How should we organise it since we cannot get it before our journey (I understand you can only get it 45 days in advance?) On our journey it might be possible but I am not sure which of the Stan countries might or might not accept us considering that we of course have no residence status. We could have a second passport mailed to Germany but when we cross the border they might notice that our passport with the Russian visa does not have the Kazakh stamp. Of course we can then show the other passport but some countries might not like you to have two passports.

All of this will be done next year so there is still time to organise it, but I would be really happy about some hints or comments about how to best arrange it (and maybe recommendations for agencies).

Thanks a lot in advance in best regards,
FCMS
