Renting a car in Tbilisi

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Georgia

I will be renting a car in Tbilisi for a portion of my stay in Georgia. I'm wondering if anyone has experience on taking a rental car into Armenia or Turkey. I've read that it's possible. Is it an additional fee or insurance charge? Any advice on a company to use?

I have Georgian friends in Batumi who used to drive regularly to Turkey and back. they no longer do so because Tureky imposes hefty insurance charges at the border. I do not know how much these charges are, nor whether they apply to hire cars, but I would definitely check this before you go to avoid a nasty surprise.

Be careful where you hire a car. Some friends of mine came to visit and the car broke down twice (smoking car battery), the headlights didn't work and the windscreen wipers didn't work. Make sure you go with a reputable rental company and not one of the local cheaper ones. My friends went with "Rent Cars in Tbilisi" who are supposed to be known for their scamming. Lucky my friends kept them informed of the repairs and got their money, deposit and expenses back but I've seen on expat forums here in Tbilisi of other travellers who had to pay for the repairs, and didn't get their deposit back either. Our story ended ok, but driving back from Vardzia to Tbilisi in the rain with no windscreen wipers was not a fun experience.
