Hi all,
I am planning a 8 week backpacking trip starting From Germany going to Poland, Austria, Hungary Bosnia, Slovenia, maybe Croatia, and possibly a few other places. My question is, because I will be traveling in June and July, should I pre book accommodation in hostels? I'm not super picky on rooms but do have a budget and reallllly get creeped out if rooms aren't pretty clean.

I know flexibility is great, but wondering if you have travelled here at these times and had any issues with accommodation? Also, if you have been you must have used a rail pass right? thanks in advance!

I have travelled through these countries several times in summer.

I rarely booked anything more than a day or two in advance.Hostel prices don't really vary if you book in advance or not,and I prefer the flexibility of deciding as I go.

This does mean however...that you will not always get the cheapest bed possible (it may be gone)...and that you will not always get a place in the "#1 on Tripadvisor hostel" (it may be full ;-)

The freedom of being able to stay longer, leave earlier,or simply decide to change for a huge variety of reasons (from how you are feeling to the weather,to who you meet and new places you hear about on the way)is well worth it for me.

The only time you might have problems at all is when there is a major festival on...in that case, you should book in advance.

Otherwise, you can decide as you go.No harm in planning of course...research is useful, but personally I wouldn't be locked in to a set plan for such a lengthy trip.

If you book everything in advance, you will lost any flexibility and freedom.
It's possible to book or contact the next place when you leave the last one.
