Hi, I'm visiting a friend in Poland-Gdansk in Mid January 2011 for 3 Weeks. This will be my first time in Europe. I'm flying to Gdansk via Frankfurt. Being from a warm 25-35 degrees South Africa, is it better to purchase winter clothes in Poland? A Sub zero windbreaker(Colombia brand) cost about 120 - 320 Euros here in South Africa. I want t travel as light as possible from SA. I know we'll be visiting Zakopane for 7 days the second day i land in Gdank using the overnight train. Besides skiing and hiking, what is really worthwhile visiting in or around Poland since i have 2 additional weeks to explore. Gio.
Ask your frend about prices for winter clothes. In forums, you risk to get answers from people who were in Poland many years ago. | 1
Take a look at this list of Poland's top destinations here. You'll be cold just leaving the airport in Gdansk without a coat in January; perhaps you could get the coat in advance and take it on the plane with you as carry-on luggage, then buy a hat, gloves and boots when you arrive. Wildroo | 2
Mid Jan in Poland is FREEZING - in fact its very cold already. If you wait til you get to Poland you will freze whilst shopping around. Do yourself as favour and take some warm clothes. | 3
Hi, There is quite a lot to do and see around Krackow. | 4
Around Gdansk you can arrange something we call "kulig" (see pictures here: http://kaszubyranczo.w.interia.pl/kulig.htm). It always ends with a big fireplace and local food made on the fire. Krakow and area around is the must in Poland. Other nice cities are: Gdansk, Wroclaw, Torun, Poznan. You can also catch a cheap flight (e.g. Ryanair, WizzAir) to Scandinavia (Norway? Sweden?). Or travel by land to Ukraine (Lvov) or Russia (St Petersburg). Tom | 5
