Krakow to Budapest: Bus or Train?

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Poland

Going from Krakow to Budapest, which is cheaper - bus or train? Any major pros/cons for either?

This is a personal preference for me, but once a trip gets past about 4 or 5 hours long, I much prefer the train. On the longer trips, I really enjoy the fact that you can get up, walk around, visit the restaurant car. Or better yet, sleep on an overnight train.

Buses often need to stop every several hours for a rest stop. In my experience, the buses often do not have working bathrooms. And, again a personal preference, I just can't get comfortable to get a decent rest in the upright bus seats, especially overnight.

Agree with #1. Bus will be a bit cheaper but much less comfortable. On a train you can get up, walk around, go to the toilet or restaurant car when you want, easier to chat to neighbours. Get a good night's sleep on the 22:15 from Krakow Glowny, arrive Budapest Keleti 08:32. Its even better now these countries jonied Schengen because nobody awakens you in the middle of the night to check passports.

Mmm, I also usually prefer the train over the bus, but this very route is an exception as the bus is much faster (3 hours less), cheaper and goes through much nicer scenery. On the down side, buses only go on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the 6 am departure time can put people off (but you'd be in Krakow at 1.30 pm).

As noted above, the train is a better idea if you want to travel overnight but check out the recent report of thieves on board here.

Pros and cons. The bus route is more scenic, although the bus leaves Krakow at 3 pm and it's dark by 4 pm now so you won't see much either way. You can book bus online whereas you can't book train tickets online. I just looked up the bus tickets and it seems to be around 55 zl Krakow-Budapest one way, whereas I just paid 200zl for a sleeper Warsaw-Budapest. So, bus will be cheaper, but the train ticket includes a night's accommodation. Bus arrives late at night (10.30 I think), train arrives first thing in the morning. Like #3 said, bus doesn't go every day. So, it might depend on your time-table.
