Katowice Hostel

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Poland

Dear Thorntree,

I am spending one day in Katowice. I could not find any hostels on Hostelworld or Hostelbookers. But I found:

  1. This rather dilapidated looking one (hostelz.com) http://www.hostelz.com/hostel/65343-Slazaczei

  2. A pleasant looking one: http://www.jopihostel.pl/

I'd like to be centrally located since I only have one day in Katowice. If it's close to the BWA gallery (http://www.bwa.katowice.pl/), it's a bonus.

My LP doesn't even mention Katowice, so I turn to you guys! Which do you recommend? Or are there other alternatives?

Thank you heaps in advance :)

LP doesn't mention Katowice for a reason - there is nothing there that tourists would find attractive. I used to live there for a few years and it's convinient place to live in, but absolutely nothing to do there travel wise. You could check out Muzeum Slaskie but that's about it. "Spodek" (which means 'flying saucer') which is kind of enternatinment center in the middle of the city is worth taking a look at in the evening when it is illuminated and looks exactly like UFO

Have fun

It's no Krakow but perhaps interesting for a short visit nevertheless. Read this online guide - it also lists the cheapest places to stay, including one sort-of-hostel.

Go to Krakow, you'll find plenty of hostels there. Katowice is not much of a tourist city, unless you like smokestacks from factories.

#3 Smoke is not really a problem anymore. Air quality in Katowice is actually better these days than in Warsaw. The times when all the norms were 300% over the limit are long over. Lots of mines and factories have been closed down. But having said that there is nothing to do in Katowice from tourist/traveller's perspective. Go to Krakow if you can as advised above.
Or go for a day trip to Pszczyna. It's a town about 35km south of Katowice. Beautiful historical town center with a castle in a massive park http://www.zamek-pszczyna.pl/ Highly recommended. The park should look gorgeuse if there is snow.
There are many trains from Katowice's main station (about 40 minutes ride)
