Is the Border crossing in Sighet to Solotvino open yet?

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Romania

Hello there,
I was just wondering if the border crossing from Sighet to Solotvino open yet?
Can foreigners cross, and what is Solotvino is like?
I asked old Mihai a Romanian man and he told me it was closed but during the War he fetched Salt from Ukraine
and made a fair bit of money!
I also wanted to know if Chernivitsi is far off.
Any information will be appreciated.
Thank You

Yes, it's open (in fact it's been open since June 2008 and it was also open between January-August 2007).
>Can foreigners cross,

Yes.

>I also wanted to know if Chernivitsi is far off.

It's about 200 km away.

Thank you Ktak!
It was a fast reply, I went away from computer and when I came back the answer was there!
Unfortunately Old Mihai died this year, and Yes it was World War 2.
He didnt me where he went to get the salt, but I think it may have been Solotvino.
Ktak do you know if their is a salt mine in Solotvino or teresva? because I want to check out Salt mine for breathing health.

Yes, there are some salt mines in Solotvino and apparently they can be used to treat respiratory diseases.

there are 2-3 daily buses Stv-Chern-but more if you do the obvious thing=change in Rakhiv, there is NO busstation in Solot-so just ask locals where to wait/join them and stand in an overcrushed minibus-welcome to UKr!
Solot is a DUMP-a tiny village with 1 of the worst ''shops'' I ever saw in UA-and then comes a dilapidated factory-thenn former lakes turned into some make do campingsite-and then another part of the village along the ''main'' road. my best advice is to get out of it asap and go to Rakhiv=many, many tourist places and facilities and a proper busstation for onward.

Glad to hear the border is open now. I will definitely be using it soon after getting turned back twice in the last couple of years.

Bit of a hard dis against Solotvino there. No, it's not Lviv but not everyone gets to live on a chocolate box.

It's a workaday village fairly typical for the region and it doesn't have too bad a traveller infrastructure:
It's a steep climb from the border up to the village but there you'll find a weekday bank and an ATM.
There's a couple of bars and a general store.
On your left is the railway station. There are a few trains a day, a couple "fast" but mostly slow but you can get where you want to go. Keep following the road for 10 minutes or so, crossing the railway again and you will get to the main Chust-Rakiv road. Stand there for the buses and minibuses that pass roughly at least hourly all day.
Right on the road junction is a pizzeria (they also have steak I reccomend) and they have rooms en suite for about € 20 a night. Bit expensive maybe for what it is but I always stay there.

Happy trails.

yes the boarder is open i can see it from the hostel. The salt mines are not great but if you fancy a salt bath with a load of Ukrainians its definitely for you. There are some wooden huts near the baths which are cheaper than the hotel and the local resteraunts arent bad and the beer is much better than the Romanian variety. Now no one will talk to me for a week for saying that!

In a couple months time I may be crossing at this point!

The border crossing Solotivino – Sighet is most definitely open; I used it the other week.

It may change again in September but right now the train service at Solotvino is just the overnight train to and from Lviv at 15xx plus 3 local trains a day. But no problems getting ing a bus from the main road next to the pension as I mentioned above.

I really would allow at least 90 minutes to get from the Solotvino “bus stop” (it’s some flattened dirt and a tree with a wreath on it) to Sighet railway / bus station via the border. The guards on both sides aren’t that interested in getting people processed quickly and smoothly and there’s a bit of a walk on the Ukrainian side. Maybe some of the little shops or stands will change money but I didn’t see any signs.

And arriving into Sighet it’s a fairly long detour via the ATMs on the main town square back to the station if you are in direct transit.

The train to Bucharest leaves Sighet at 15xx and the train to the Banat (Arad, Timisoara) at16xx

I will definitely be using the route again though. I crossed that corner of Ukraine by bus between Slovakia and Romania in four hours which would have taken a whole day via Hungary.

The bus and train connections between Slovakia and Ukraine though, leave a lot to be desired……..

Is the Border crossing in Sighet to Solotvino open? I will be in Solotivino in July and I have to get to Sighet. Is there any bus transportation or I should go by feet?
Thanks a lot!
