Help with a trip to Czechia and Austria

Hello,

I was not sure whether to post this topic in eastern Europe section or in western one, therefore I'm sorry if I'm not in the right section.
We're planning to do a 2 week trip to Czech republic and Austria. A week in each country. I'm sure we're going to spend two days in Prague and two days in Vienna. Is that enough time for a capital cities? Could someone suggest me some castles near Prague or Vienna?
Also, what other places and cities are worth a visit?

The main castle that people visit near Prague is Karlstejn, but, in my opinion, it is not as attractive, or as historically important as Krivoklat or Konopiste. Both of these castles can easily be reached from Prague and make excellent day trips.

A little on the skimpy side, especially for Vienna...you can see a lot in 2 days in Prague but one more day there would be ideal...for Vienna, try and make 3 or 4 days, maybe with a side-trip to Bratislava for a day...

Could someone suggest me some castles near Prague or Vienna?

One of the main attractions on the periphery of Vienna is Schoenbrunn Palace which has fine grounds and is just outside the centre of the city...within the city itself are the Hofburg and Belvedere Palaces...in Prague, I presume you know that Prague Castle is probably the main attraction and the old fortress of Vysehrad on the outskirts is also worth a visit, if you have time,..

Also, what other places and cities are worth a visit?

Best to know if you have a car or using public transport before hazarding a reply to this...

No problem but you can cross-post in both branches to get the best range of replies...be sure to let us know if you do this as it's very irritating to spend a lot of time answering a question, maybe checking various facts, and then open the next branch and find the same query has already been comprehensively answered already...

The other major place on the Czech tourist trail is of course Cesky Krumlov. Highly recommended. I concur with other posters in suggesting 2 days in Vienna is a little light on and I think a week in Prague is not too much although it is compact so you can see a lot just by walking in a couple of days.

I occasionally get on Thorntree Forum and I recommend it to friends when they plan to travel but I always warn them that there are some people who simply cannot resist sarcasm and scathing remarks....such as neckervd posted above. There is no excuse whatsoever for "Do you really think that people here have time to write an endless list ". On the contrary, some people are very happy to make many suggestions without knowing a whole lot about the person. And if they don't want to, they don't! So would the people who have unhelpful comments to make, or unpleasant comments to make, cut the rest of us some slack and say nothing if they can't say something nice?!

Flissy, I suppose that you know as well as I do that there are much more than 100 places worth a visit alone in Austria. As far as I know, the truth has nothing to do with sarcasm.
BTW: you didn't even try to give a helpful answer to Gabi.

You could consider training it to Salzberg which is fantastic for a few days while in Austria, Vienna is very impressive (think Paris without all the immigrants and recently pressure cleaned ;) Prague is also great for a few days in town then maybe off for an overnight at the other places mentioned above. 3 days is a good time minimum in the above places so even with travel you can swueenze somewhere else in. Staying right in town for all these places puts you right within walking distance of sights and local transport for all places

Considering your suggestions, I decided to spend 3 days in Vienna (with a side trip to Bratislava) and 2 days in Prague, I wonder is that a good decision?
I also decided to spend 1 night in Cesky Krumlov and 3 nights in Salzburg, taking trips to nearby castles and places. Has anyone been to Werfen castle and Ice caves? Is it worth to take day trip from Salzburg to Werfen?

Been to the ice-caves and it's a very good trip, unless you suffer from vertigo as the entrance is very high-up and the trip up the mountain is quite steep......haven't been to the fortress but it's a popular destination, particularly if you can time it to coincide with one of the twice-daily falconry displays...

2 days in Prague and 3 nights in Salzburg, I wonder is that a good decision?

Although I love Salzburg and its wonderful environs, I'd probably advise you to give the 3 days to Prague and curtail SBG to 2 days with a day around town and then a day-trip...a better day out for you from Salzburg, in my opinion, would be to Berchtesgaden, Eagles Nest and Lake Koenigsee but it's all a matter of taste, of course...and if you like exploring gorgeous countryside, then you'll be happy with your own plan...

But whatever way you do this, you'll have a great time...incidentally, the finest castle is in Salzburg itself, the spectacular Festung Hohensalzburg with its great views over the nearby Bavarian Alps...also impressive is the one in Cesky Krumlov and, of course, Prague's needs no introduction...
