Cycling Scene in GeorgiaCountry forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Georgia
Hi There I will be moving to Georgia shortly and am interested in finding out about the domestic cycling scene. Are there any cycling clubs in the country (road or XC off road). Are there any proper bike shops? There does not seem to be any up to date resources on line for Georgian cycling. There must be something,as Georgia must have some of the best off road in the world. Any general info greatly received. Thanks in advance. Please note
There are some clubs of friends or like-minded people that go out of Tbilisi and do some rides. But this is more of informal nature and can not qualify as "clubs" of western standard. Bike shop - Magelani has a decent shop, there were couple more nearby Dinamo stadium. Vake velodrome - not sure if it is still operational, seemed quite defunct couple years ago. I hope it helps a bit... | 1
Unfortunately the Georgian in the olympic road race was not a great success. He failed to complete the race as he got lapped. I was watching as the race was within walking distance of my house. Here's Giorgi Nadiradze followed by the "end of race" van: http://www.flickr.com/photos/smithfamily1/7717557794. As others have said, the main hazards cycling in Georgia are lack of consideration from motorists and aggressive svan sheepdogs. Main roads have largely been repaired since the bad days of the 1990s but many roads in rural areas are little more than rutted tracks that turn to mud in wet weather. | 2
