Coastal trip in Croatia for 6 days (Split to Dubrovnik via Plitvice)

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Croatia

We arive in Split on Sunday afternoon (September 14th) and have an idea of doing the following:
Sunday- Ancona to Split-possibly stay in Sibenik
Monday- Travel toward Plitvice going through Zadar
Tuesday-Arive in Plitvicka area
Wednesday-Plitvicka area
Thursday-Plitvicka to the coast, toward Senj. Not too sure where along the coast to stay.
Friday-??
Saturday- Drive the rest of the way to Split
Sunday-Split to Dubrovnik.
Can this area be covered in this time? Are there any places we should try to spend some time in? We don't mind having 5-6 hours in the car for one or two days ,but do want to break up the trip with shorter drives on the other days if possible.Staying in smaller towns and away from the crowds is also ok. How is the driving with only knowing english? Thanks for any advice. BT

There's a few things to see in and around Split; are you sure you only want to spend one night there? While the town certainly isn't as grand as Dubrovnik, it does have a lovely old-city area, plus there's the Roman ruins of Salona on the edge of town, and beautiful Trogir just half an hour away (really, don't miss it).

Hi: I agree with Croatia about Plitvice. I saw Plitvice and drove from the park to Zadar in one day. I don't think you need Tuesday and Wednesday for Plitvice. Trogir is a must-see, as Paul noted. I think I must be the only person in the world who found Split more intriguing than Dubrovnik -- I would recommend taking your time there. But the distances you note are certainly doable in your time frame. The driving was a pleasure for us, and only English would not seem to be a problem. We were stopped by police for speeding (oops) and communicated with them in English.

If you like hiking and outdoors, then that isn't too long in Plitvice. I would have stayed that long had the weather not turned rainy and cold when I was there.

Given your planned itinerary and short time, it would make more sense to take the ferry from Ancona to Zadar, from there make a trip to Plitvice (Zd to Plitvice takes 1.5hrs by car, and how long will you stay there depends entirely on you - the whole trip from Zd + the NP visit can be done in as little as one day) and from there hit the motorway and drive all the way south to Dbk stopping along the way as you please. The new highway passes by all the places you planned to visit anyway (NP Krka, Sibenik, Trogir and so on). On your return take ferry from St to Ancona.
