Camping in Romania

Hi!
I`m asking this question actually on behalf of my parents. They are both over 70 and would like to go camping in Romania in their RV. They're both really adventurous - as you can probably tell. So they would like to know about experiences with camping in Romania, maybe even some good tips about camping sites and things to be careful of when driving through Romania.

Just about Maramures because that is where i am based at the moment. There arent to many camp sites but lots of possible pull ins on the side of the road. If you are going to take your vehicle on to a field make sure you ask the owner who will 90% of the time let you camp on their propperty. In the Isa valley there is a lot of open terain especialy if you take one of the many side roads,the road to Glod would be a good example though the condition of the road isnt great.
If you need petrol cross into the Ukraine where the price of petrol is half that of Romania and the quality is fine. You can do this at Halmeu Sighet or Suceava.
We had a lot of camper vans through last year and even put a few up in the back yard,mostly they were from Italy and Germany.If your parents need to hook up for power there arent any sites as such where you can do that but a few of the local hotels will let you park in thier car parks if they arent to busy and yo can usualy hook up there.Do ask if i can help with any particular queeries about this region.

There was nothing much in the mid-1990s but now there are several quite decent EU-standard camping sites dotted across Romania if you want full services - otherwise camping at the local sites often means a shoddy toilet block and cold water only. Once I was at an official local campsite (near the top of the pass road going across the Apuseni mountains) whcih didn't even have running water or toilets. I camped wild all over Romania and it's easy - do ask the land owner if you're near a village/house.

The greatest danger of travelling in Romania in my view is that you'll badly hurt yourself out of rage for not having visited earlier. It's that lovely.
