Accoms in Split or Makarska

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Croatia

Hey,

I have 4 days to spend in either Makarska or Split in late August. I have 2 questions:
1) Which do you reccommend? (I don't really want to do both, I will stay at one and do a day trip to the other)

2) Do you know of/reccommend a specific Hostels/cheap accoms in either location? I know I can probably find something online or private (at train.bus stations), but I would much rather stay somewhere that was reccommended to me. I kinda want to stay somewhere that will be fun, is in town, and will allow me to meet people.

I would really appreciate any help you can give me with this.

Cheers,
Greg

Depends if the friendly people you want to mix with are Croatian or English speakers! Makarska is a holiday resort, Split is a working town (with a fair few tourists). Accommodation is marginally more expensive in Split, but transport links are better. Makarska doesn't have a defined centre the same as Split does, rather it's a long thin series of neighbourhoods.

From your posting it sounds like you'd probably like to stay in hostel like accommodation, check out Hostelworld if that's the case. Personally, I prefer to stay in private accommodation as it is cheaper and quieter. If that's the case, then check out accommodation that's on Apartmani Hrvatska, or just wait until you get to Split on the bus and you will be beseiged by people offering you private accommodation.

I stayed in Hotel Jupiter in Split last month. They are in LP Croatia 2007. The hotel is basic but entirely adequate, and right in the centre of the old town. I paid 250 kuna per night to stay alone in a double room with shared bath.
