The new timetable from december 9th will bring several new direct sleeping car train connections:

Basel - Moscow (daily, leaves Basel at ~18:00, arrives Moscow at ~11:00 two days later)
Munich - Moscow (daily, leaves Munich at ~19:00, arrives Moscow at ~11:00 two days later)
Amsterdam - Moscow (daily, leaves Amsterdam at ~19:00, arrives Moscow at ~11:00 two days later)

Two times weekly (on thursdays and saturdays) there will also be a direct sleeping car from Paris (departs ~20:45) to Moscow…

I would like to travel around the country during the next summer, but a friend of mine (who has being living in the capital for more than a decade) told me that I should wait. He is concerned about the elections in march and he is afraid that the political situation might not be stable after the elections for a while. Me and my brother are planning to go with the Transsiberian Railway Thursday the 27th of December from Moscow to Ulan Baator. It is time to buy tickets. Finding maps before you go to Russia can be a little difficult for some of the smaller places.

Does anyone have any advice as to which Chinese city (or Hong Kong) is the best bet for a US passport holder with a Chinese residence permit to obtain the visas necessary for the Trans-Siberian train to Moscow? Which visas will I need, and where can I get them?
