Hi there.
The LP book talks about the need to get a permit if wishing to spend some time in the Volga Delta out of Astrakhan. Will be crossing the Causasus from Sochi area in early May and was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on how best to go about getting such a delta permit and any helpful hints about travelling in the delta region. I had a look at the web sites mentioned in the LP book but thought I'd seek any Thorn Tree views first, especially as I would prefer to travel…

Hi everyone!

My name is Mirte, and I'm currently on a gap year before university. I am hoping to take the Trans-Siberian/Mongolian from Moscow - Irkutsk - UlanBator - Beijing around the 21st of March 2015. Really excited but as I'm travelling on my own for the first time it would be nice to have some company (for safety and fun!. I have had no luck thus-far, but I was wondering if anybody was planning on travelling this route around this time that I could possibly join?

Thanks! :D

Hi,

I plan to take the ferry from Japan to Sakhalin this summer, and then travel in Siberia. I am an American citizen and need a visa, and I understand that some of the areas I plan to go to are on the restricted list, and that I will need a permit. I confirmed something to this effect via both ILS and the Russian Consulate, but the best advice I could get from anyone was that I needed to contact someone in Sakhalin to get the proper permits.

I also may visit Khabarovsk (not sure) and…

An account of a road journey across winter Russia, from Mongolia to Estonia.

http://eurasiaoverland.com/2010/12/28/24/

I start coming down the Chuya Highway, then make stops in Biysk, Akademgorodok, Omsk, Chelyabinsk, and Ufa, continuing to wonderful Samara on the Volga River, probably my favourite Russian city. Then deeper into history in Nizhniy Novgorod and Vladimir, site of my favourite Russian church (St. Demetrius). A nice day in Suzdal, then on to Sergiev Posad, heart of the Russian…

Hello fellow travellers,

I am wondering if anyone has any insight into the safety of travelling the trans-Mongolian rail with the state of Russia and the conflict that is going on in the Ukraine.

We would probably fly into Warsaw, Poland and train into Moscow and then down into Mongolia, finally landing in Beijing. I am from Canada and there is no nationwide advisory for Russia. However, you should exercise a high degree of caution due to crime and some regional areas near the Ukraine boarder.

Hi All,

I am an American currently living in Berlin with a work visa and I'm planning to travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg this coming May. As it is already February, I would like to get the first step of the process started and try to book a flight a long with accommodation (AirBnB) so that I can work on the invitation part of the equation.

I have two questions before proceeding:

1.) Has anyone had any issues or is there a good resource where I can check to see if there's any problems as…

Hello,

A friend and I are doing a tour this summer which ends with 2 days in St. Petersburg. The 1st day we have a free afternoon & the 2nd day is a tour of the Hermitage. We are trying to figure out how many extra days to add in St. Petersburg.

We'd like to go to these places: Peter & Paul fortress, Peterhof & Pushkin palaces, Russian musuem (state museum), Admiralty, and possibly Church of Savior on Spilled Blood.

I read that the Hermitage is inside the Winter Palace. Is there a separate…
