Hullo all,

We're going to take the Transsiberian in April, and we'd like to do it mostly through couchsurfing, but as there's always the possibility of not getting a couch, we'd like to know whether the train station sleeping rooms are an option that could be used at the last minute. Will they be available? Are they clean? If it makes any difference, we're going to stop at

Kazan
Novosibyrsk
Krasnoyarsk
Irkutsk
Ulan Ude
Khabarovsk
and Vladivostok

Heaps of immense thanks in advance!
Tiago

I've used them once (Komnaty Otdykha) and they were one of the best budget accommodations I had in Russia...you just need a valid train ticket and your passport details to book...bear in mind that you may have to share a room (like in a hostel) and also there may be a curfew, but apart from that, no other reservations...

Train station sleeping rooms are available in Kazan, Novosibyrsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude and Khabarovsk, but not in Vladivostok.

Just a warning. Few years ago British team was refused to stay at Novosibirsk railway station sleeping rooms due to they didn't accept foreigners - problem was the outlet needs to have special permission for OVIR registration and they hadn't one. We were managed to turn to homestay instead. But of course things may be changed.

Mind it - No english spoken on train station.

If you're around the city, try to get along with English-Speaking hostels, they will give you much more information to experience and sometimes it's cheaper.
