thanks candi i have traveled Russia before on the trans Siberian route from west to east.
i can speak basic Russian, enough to buy tickets etc.
i was assuming it would take me about 2 weeks to get to Moscow thanks for confirming.
were any of the stops on the bam good for seeing lake baykal as i spent a week there earlier this year and would like to stop and see it again.
i wasn't expecting the trains to be in that bad condition as the trans Siberian were lovely and i traveled plats cart.
thanks for your help.

i suspect that the trains you traveled along the Trans Siberian route were lower numbered cars and thus newer and nicer than the trains on the BAM line.

There is only one stop on the BAM that passes near Lake Baikal, Severobaikalsk which is at the northern end of the lake. It is impossible to get from there to Irkutsk in winter. From June to mid September one can take a hydrofoil on the lake but otherwise there is no road connection.

There are a few things to do there but this is really the only stop worth mentioning.

Use the poezda.net website to figure your transportation schedule. Use the rzd.ru site to check ticket costs and availability.

candi 1 thanks for the infomration.

I have been strudying the BAM Guide and othre sources and need your help. I sounded to me like the scenery on the BAM is much better than on the Trans-Siberian. I took the Trans-Siberian twice and want to take a different long journey with the wife and small children next summer. Would you recommend the Taishet-Severo part and then the boat down to Listvyanka and Irkutsk?
