I'm thinking of travelling to Yasnaya Polyana within a couple of months, and would love to hear the forum's thoughts and suggestions, including any precautions I should take.
are you taking any kind of tour or going on your own? Are you been in Russia before? Do you speak any Russian?

Hello daniiltimin. I'll be going on my own, and haven't been to Russia before, and don't speak Russian. What do you suggest?

What kind of precautions do you mean? Being (and behave as a) gay or being a member of EU-parlement and having VOTED PRO sanctions are the only things that comes to mind.
Russia is so open minded and welcoming so don't worry.

Thanks. I meant general precautions concerning insects, the weather, the language etc..

I see you like a challenge...
Within a couple of months meaning november and december?
In that case: insects - none, weather - rain and occasional snow (no permanent snow on the ground if it is not unusualy cold), language - Russian. Full stop.
I think language might be a problem for you, especially when you gonna by train tickets and stuff in Moscow... Definitely have a dictionary with you, will help you a lot while you are in Russia...
I mean, it's a lot of things that you'll need to think about and it is really hard to suggest anything when I don't know your itinerary and a travel plan. If you'll share more info about your trip maybe I can suggest you more tips...
Are you traveling to Russia only to go to Yasnaya Polyana? Do you have a plan how you gonna get there? And where you gonna stay? And for how long?

Thanks. My main aim in going to Russia is visiting Yasnaya Polyana, but I do want to explore other places (Moscow, St. Petersburg) also. I'll probably be going in November or December- reach moscow by plane, then perhaps a train to Yasnaya Polyana. I am yet to figure out about accommodation- on the Yasnaya Polyana Museum website, it is mentioned that they have a guest house. Altogether, I want to spend around 20-25 days. I haven't decided on a more specific travel plan yet and will message you when I'm more prepared.
Nice! Good time of the year to visit, no crowds, but will be pretty cold already. Hopefully you'll get lucky with the weather - my favorite is when it is a little minus (in Celsius) and snowing :) I feel it's kind of a thing, Russia associated with snow and in my opinion beginning of December is the best time to visit Russia.

If you're thinking about holidays in Moscow, personaly, I think that the most interesting and colorful time is the New Year holidays! And (as a citizen) I'll be glad to see you on our streets this winter!
And I found some info about the program of this New Year, hope it'll be helpful:
