Thanks to all the helpful posts on this forum we were able to apply for our Russian visas today with only one minor glitch. We got all the things right that are confusing but have been posted about and clarified here. Problem: they couldn't accept my photo. I was using the same photo that is in my passport but it is a 3/4 view of my face. The officer in the Consulate said it had to be straight face on. He explained that they have to send the photo to Moscow where it will be read with face recognition software and the software needs the face to be full frontal. I ran out to a nearby drugstore where they could take passport photos and got it all taken care of.

Hi Ruby,
My wife and I have just received our Russian visas, and yes the photos had to be "full-frontal".
Having said that, the processing of our visas only took 2 weeks , which we thought was very efficient, although our passports were sent to the Russian Embassy in Wellington ,NZ. Good luck with that.
