Wanting to book trains in January but noticing that the prices for tickets in January on the official website rzd.ru are much more expensive, does anyone know why? Or is this because they have just gone on sale?

For example 1st class ticket on Train number 2 from Ekaterinburg to Irkutsk on 8th January is 22,000 Rubles, while a couple of weeks earlier on 18th December (and other dates) the same train is just 15,000. The same goes for Moscow to Ekaterinburg in January. Is there a reason for this price rise? Not sure what is going on...

the reason might be that its just after the orthodox christmas and many people will have to return home after spending the festive season with their family.

Thanks Nathalie. Yeah I looked at the public holidays after posting and saw that! Also I see its a public holiday for many days at the start of January, is that right?
It seems there is a sliding scale of prices going down the closer to the date we are, they seem to get more expensive depending on how far away the date is. So hoping they may come down in price in a few weeks...

Russian long-distance rail fares change seasonally. Between 1-12 January fares are 10% more expensive than the base fare, while from 5 November to 24 December fares are 10% lower.

(Tickets are cheapest on 8-9 May, when they're discounted by 50%!)

@balkanexpress thanks for that and the link! But I think that specific fare advise says that it is for 2014 no? Would this also apply for 2015? Either way I think I'll just wait a week or so to see if they come down in price...

Siberia in Russia is the favourite place for me to travel in Russia. I travelled there some years ago and made a trans-Siberia train trip thanks to http://www.russiantrains.com/en/customer-reviews You can look for train ticket prices there and book a ticket too. That was a delight for me to travel. I enjoyed the journey and want to take it again :)
