Red Square is open at night; you can walk around the Kremlin walls at night. Yes they are lit at night.

I would also suggest walking through the Kitai Gorod area and especially along Vavarka Street which has some lovely churches which used to be nicely lit up at night. It is parallel to the river beginning a few steps from St. Basils. If you send me an email address, I will send you more information about the area.

I would also suggest a metro tour. I posted one here on the TT which I know is still around if you search for it. Try the search term "Underground Palace"

Instead of hotels which tend to be expensive in this part of town. Look at hostels. Most of them are listed in the New RU Sticky with links.

If you tell me your interests and what day of the week you will arrive, I can make more suggestions.

If your landing at DME - I'd tell you to take the express train into the city (If you stay downtown). If you get stuck trying to get into Moscow at rush hour it could be a 2-3 hour trip in a car. even if you get a little lost after the train ride you'll still be ahead.

If cost is no issue stay at the Metripol.....if cost is somewhat of an issue there are several 3-4 star hotels but don't start looking at the Marriots as they often run 500+ per night....if cost is constrained then book a hostel as previous poster mentioned. Lots to do in Moscow at night so you'll get a good feel for the city.

Metropol is a good place or also good places if cost is not an issue would be the Natsional which is across the street from Red Square and it a historic building.

Another historic hotel in Center City is the Savoy which is a little past the Metropol.

A three star place in center city, a bit run down but full of Russian charm unless it has been renovated is the Hotel Budapest. Good location, a few blocks from the Kremlin.

Actually you are v. lucky. I think one of the great sights are the red stars over the Kremlin and Red Square at night. For a week I walked thru late and night and was captivated by the whole scene. I think you will enjoy it a lot.

I just looked the prices for both the Metropol (which is really nice) and the Savoy. The Metropol is $444 and Savoy $699. Insane - imagine $699 for one night.
