Hi there,

My girlfriend and I would try and see both these cities this summer; we will be flying in from London.

Am I guessing right it will probably cheaper to fly into one, train it, and fly out from the other ? Is it possible to arrange the train over the internet before we get there ?

thanks for your help

No. Probably not. Generally speaking there are so many more flights from Moscow that it is likely to be cheaper to go round trip from Moscow. OTOH the cheapest would probably be to take a budget carrier to Riga or Tallinn and then the train from there to Russia.

Look at Air Baltic, Estonian Air, EasyJet, Ryan Air and compare them to flights to /from Russia.

Train tickets can be arranged over the internet using the rzd.ru website which is all in Russia. Tickets cannot be purchased until 45 days prior to travel. Use translation programs like translate.ru, bablefish and google to translate the pages.

thanks - thats excellent

  • perhaps we will go in through lithuania (if its considerably cheaper than flying into russia); but that might take up more time from the week we have.

It is an overnight train from Vilnius to Petersburg or Moscow although the latter goes through Belarus which means getting another visa.

Even if you don't fly into one of the Baltic countries, I suspect that you will find it cheaper to fly into and out of Moscow.

Another option is to fly to Germany and take one of the German budget airlines that fly to Russia. Check whichbudget.com for possibilities.

What would you like to know about visas?

Actually, before you start asking questions, please read the New RU sticky. The link is in my signature line. If you don't find the answer to your questions there, then feel free to ask.
