I arrive at Moscow's DME airport at midnight and my next flight doesn't depart unit 10:45 AM. Even if I start checking in at, say 8 AM, this makes for a very long layover. So - is there an airport lounge one can purchase time at? Secondly, if wanting to spend the night at the airport hotel - apparently 15 minutes outside the terminal, do you still need a transit visa (for Canadian travellers?) And if so, can I just make arrangements at the airport upon arrival for this?

Thanks very much.

First - thanks everyone for your helpful comments.

Right now - at 2 AM, I am at Moscow's DME airport. I decided against the lounge on the return leg of my Central Asian trip. Following these steps will get you easily to the international boarding area - with no need for a Russian transit visa.

Immediately upon de-planing, follow the yellow signs indicating Transit/Transfer and go upstairs to the Transit check-in counter. Friendly staff will ask to see your continuing journey's e-ticket, and importantly, the tag that was issued when you initially checked in your luggage. They will transfer your bag for you onto your connecting flight and issue you a new baggage claim slip. You will not be able to access your luggage at this point, so be sure to pack your carry on bag wisely - likely for a good 8 to 10 hour layover. Once this is accomplished - about a 20 minute procedure, you are directed to Passport Control - an effortless one minute check. Afterwards, abracadabra - an opaque glass wall opens for you and voilà - you enter the international boarding area.
