Thanks so much for this information. I have been researching a summer trip to Eastern Siberia and Mongolia and was interested in this. Which trip did you do?
I flew up from Khabarovsk and flew out to Beijing. Airfare from Khabarovsk was a rip-off. To Beijing it was OK.
If I knew what I know now I would have taken the minivan from Tommot to Yakutsk. I didnt do this as the state of the road worried me. However, having now taken the road from Nikoleavsk to Komsomolsk, a 20 hr ride, I dont think the roads in the Far East are as bad as claimed. Standard Australian dirt road.
Tommot to Yakutsk is probably about 10 hours.............

Wow, you are extreme kind of person, very impressive.

Can you say a few words about Komsomolsk ? I wanna go there next august, by plane from Moscow, before heading south to China. What about the city ? What about Nikolaevsk : is it worth a trip ? From Komsomolsk I intend to join Khabarovsk by bus : have you heard about it ?
Thanks mate
There really not much in Komsomolsk. I was only there to take the hydrofoil down to the mouth of the Amur river at Nikoleavsk. About the only thing to do is walk through the city down to the river and come back again.
The hydrofoil is REALLY good. Takes about 12 hours. Pulls in at isolated river settlements every hour or so. Nikoleavsk is really run-down and nothing there to see. However you can take the local bus down towards the river mouth and a ferry across to the other side of the Amur. You really feel in the middle of no-where!
There is almost no accomodation in NK- I stayed at Hotel Tikhaya Gavan, Chitinskaya ulitsa, 6 which was not cheap, but the staff fixed me up with the mini-bus to Komsomolsk.!
Because the ferry broke down I had to come back on the mini-bus.
There are several buses everyday between Komsomolsk and Khabarovsk. Most of them stop at Khabarovsk Airport on the way.
More about the hydrofoil- https://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/forums/europe-eastern-europe-the-caucasus/russia/amur-river-hydrofoil-to-nikolaevsk?page=1#post_21380736

Thanks a lot for all this ! If I get it well, you took the hydrofoil down from K to N, spent the night in N and went back to K the day after by minibus ? Sounds exciting. My plan is to arrive in K by plane from Moscow and start my travel there. Do some people speak english around ? (my russian is very poor, enough to buy a train ticket, not more) And what about accomodation in K ? Oh, last question : do you know about an hydrofoil going from K to Khabarovsk ?
