Hi,
I will be taking the ferry from Wakkanai (where? ;) Japan to Sakhalin and onto mainland Russia next summer. I am doing research for this portion of the trip and found a possibility that interests me. One has to go from Korsakov to Yuzhno Sakhalinsk, and then to the other ferry port in Kholmsk. You can take taxi or minibus to Kholmsk, but then I read about the hiking trail on the old abandoned railroad heading west of YS. It seems to have as decent reviews as anything in that area, thought it would be an interesting way to head in that direction. It apparently joins with a road heading to Kholmsk, I think 35 km in?

Anyone know anything about hiking and then hitching or taking taxi/bus on the road to Kholmsk? Or want to do it early June next year? lol

Hi,
"the old abandoned railroad"? Do you mean the one from Nevelsk to Kholmsk?
I've been there this summer, but I didn't do the hiking, I took a marshrutka from Nevelsk to Kholmsk. The railroad and the bus road are along the curvy coastline, while one side is the Okhotsk Sea, the other side is the mountains. The scenery is indeed nice, however the road is dusty, I ate some earth even on the bus. It won't be very convenient to take the marshrutka on the way because there are only 3 shifts.

I think this is slightly different, this starts at Nododerevevnskaya station, not along the coast but through the forest/center of island towards the west coast. I believe it is 35km of track/trail.
