Hello, I'm stopping on the Trans-Siberian rail at Irkutsk to visit Olkhon for 3 days. Is it possible to get from Olkhon to Ulan Ude without the need to circle back to Irkutsk and take the train from there to UU? Is there any ferry that navigates across Baikal from Olkhon to any of the Eastern/South-Eastern lake-shore towns and bus/taxi it from there to UU?

There is a ferry one time a week (AFAIK on Mon) Irkutsk-Olkhon-Ust Barguzin. From Ust Barguzin you can easy get to Ulan Ude either by bus or scheduled taxi (marshrutka).
