i'm planning to take my girlfriend to St Petersburg this Christmas. I've never been to the city before. Most of the reputable websites seem to throw up either budget dives or totally oppulant, corportate palaces when i do a search. I just wondered if anyone has a recommendation of a really cool hotel, one that is either design-led or bohemian. Recommendations of similar minded bars and restaurants, cafes and galleries would also be gratefully recieved,
many thanks in advance

There are some smaller boutique type places. Check out Helvetica Suites. They don't seem to have a website but there are probably lots of reviews about them.
Also take a look at the offerings of Palladium Travel and their pages on minihotels. I suggest contacting them as they have been regular contributors here on the TT without touting their wares and have been reported to be reliable which in Russia is important.
There are some interesting restaurants in Petersburg. I think I mention some on my website. If not, get back to me and I'll search through my travel notes.
