I plan to go hiking in the Altay mointains in the end of july/beginning of august.

The preferred region is the Aktru area, see http://www.waytorussia.net/Altay/Aktru.html.

According to that information it seems as it's possible to just show up at the mentioned tourist camp and then organize hiking trips there on the spot. Can anybody confirm that?
Any other experiences regarding this region?

Of course it would be also necessary to organize a transfer from Barnaul to the tourist camp. Any recommendations?

There is easy transport from Barnaul to Gorni Altai but beyond that I am not sure. Check with Igor Fedyaev, whose TT user name is black_climber. [L=Omsk contact] http://www.adventuretravel.ru/eng[/L]. He leads groups in this area.

Utti, it is possible if you speak pretty good Russian, for this area is mostly focused on local visitors.
