Our train arrives in Yekaterinburg at 13:42 local time. Sunset the day we are there is 17:51. Our train to Kazan leaves Yekat at 22:24. Can you suggest what would be a good way to make the most of the short time we have in Yekat? I'm not really interested in the Romanov's church, which seems to be the one thing everyone mentions. Obviously a nice meal before we get back on the train should be included in the excursion. Thanks for your help.

Hi. I think I'll be able to advice. What are you really interested in if not Romanov's church: sunset view? food? parks? galleries? just walking around city center? Which day will it be: week day or weekend?

Thanks,
It is a Saturday. The Lonely Planet lists all the usual sites: churches, parks, museums, literary quarter, monuments, tall buildings for views, etc. - but, as usual they are quite even handed and no real indication of what is the more interesting or maybe even outstanding. I think we just want to get a good feel for what is Yekaterinburg in the very short time we have. I'm thinking we probably end up at dinner and then back to the train station with plenty of time so we don't mess up and miss the train.

City center in not that big and actually most of "nice to see" things are also in the city center.
So I would advice to have a walk along Iset River in the City center. If you're arriving to "Northern" railway station you can just have a walk in the direction of the river and then along to the center or you straight to the Romanov's church (literally called Cathedral on the Blood) which is on the way in any case. By feet it will take about 30min, or you can take a taxi (uber is working, but drivers not often speak English).
In the nearby of Romanov's Church (across the road) you'll be able to see The Church of Ascension ("Voznesenskaya") which is located on the hill and can offer a nice view of the city (also if sky is clear, it is a good spot to see the sunset; during summer a lot of young people come to this place just to hang out; see sunset; nowadays a lot of them bring shisha to smoke on open air).
On the other side of Romanov's Church will be the River Iset. As I was mentioning I suggest to take a walk further in the city center in the direction of Lenin street. Promenade is well maintained and a lot of people (especially during weekend) spend time there. Also there're a number of places to eat, drink tee/coffee there if you get cold (can't predict the weather) or want to have a break. In this area I can advice stepping by a cafe "Stolle" (Gorky street, 7a) - they make wonderful Russian pies with fish, mince, vegetables, berries. This is a chain of restaurants, so you might have already visited it in other cities, but if you haven't - really worth it.

On the cross of Iset river and Lenin street you'll see Sevastyanov's House - very beautifyl architecture, you can google for historical reference.
If you continue your walk along the River in the direction of Malyshev street (cross Lenin street, in the middle of the bridge there's underground crossing) you'll find yourself near small dam.
There're Music fountains in the river between Lenin and Malyshev streets. The are working till 25th of September. Also this is one of the main walking areas in the city. There're different places nearby (like Museum of fine Arts, Nature Museum), you will be able to see them outside and visit if you like.
After that depends on the time left / your tiredness. You can either go to have dinner somewhere nearby (you can use TripAdvisor - they have quite nice tourist map of Yekat or I can think of something to advice upon your preferences);
Or you can go to Vysotsky "skyscraper" - it will be also quite near, also located on Malyshev street 30 min walk from the river. There's a viewpoint deck - offers a great view of the city. And also there're restaurants with nice panoramic view - Panorama and Vertical - fancy ones - you can visit their websites for the menu;
Or you can continue your walk along the river further. It will also offer nice view. And you'll see Circus house when you reach next street cross.

I guess that would give you a hint of the city spirit. Hope the weather will be nice. If not I guess the agenda should be changed to something inside, which might be a gallery/exhibition.

Let me know if you have questions/concerns.
